Purpose of the Concluding Paragraph
> ... Writing > Concluding Paragraph > Purpose of the Concluding Paragraph

Generally placed as the last paragraph in the essay, the purpose of the concluding paragraph is to provide closure on the essay topic or idea. When you write an essay, you take your reader on a journey. Whatever the length of that journey, the concluding paragraph gives you an opportunity to revisit and strengthen the main parts of that journey for your reader.

A conclusion can take many shapes, but its two main purposes tend to be to do the following:

  1. Revisit the ideas and themes in the essay.
  2. Provide closure.
This is an image of a paragraph. The paragraph starts with an indent. A number one points to the first few sentences of the paragraph that revisit the ideas/themes in the essay. A number two points to the final sentence, which provides closure.
